Elders/Oversight and Deacons.

We take our authority for all offices within the church from the Bible, and in particular the book of Acts.

In Acts Chapter 6, where the Christian church was increasing in numbers, this in turn brought with it various situations and problems.

Acts 6:1 ¶  In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.

So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.  Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

In Abbey Chapel, we have taken this as part of our authority, along with other scripture passages, and this means that currently we have Elders and a  group of Deacons.

Within any church, there needs to be order, as outlined in scripture, and the New Testament gives every person a role and gifts to use within the church. One of the roles and gifts is the position of Elder, or Overseer.
In Abbey Chapel, we have two Elders, who, in accordance with scripture, 'tend the flock', and look to the spiritual growth of the church members.
