Prayer in the Square

Prayer in the Square started in May 2008. The vision for this outreach was to pray on the streets for the people of Tavistock, mainly for healing - which comes in many forms!

A joint church venture, with representatives from Abbey Chapel, Bere Alston,  Kings, St. Andrew's Whitchurch and Tavistock Methodist Church, this has been well received by the people of Tavistock and visitors to the town.

When there is space available on Bedford Square on a Saturday morning, we're out there! With a garden gazebo offerring some cover, and a few chairs for comfort, the people of Tavistock have been offerred prayer on many occasions throughout 2008 and 2009.

The morning starts with prayer and praise in Abbey Chapel an hour before we go out onto the Square. A small contingent stays in Abbey Chapel Tower Room to cover in prayer those who are out on the street. As you would expect, many people pass us by, but it has been surprising how many have welcomed us and have said how good it is to see the churches working together and to see them out on the streets.

Leaflets are handed out, explaining who we are and why we are there, and all those who receive prayer also receive some further information.

The response has been so encouraging! As time has gone on people have returned to thank us for our prayers, with reports of healings or of improvements in situations we have prayed for. We've even had little thank you gifts - like a punnett of strawberries! It is clear that people are getting used to the sight of the gazebo with it's "Prayer in the Square" banner on the back, and we are looking forward to 2009 and to seeing how God takes this work forward.

If you would like to join us in this work, speak to your church leader who will put you in touch with the PitS Team.
